How much does interior painting cost in Oklahoma, per room and whole house?
By Danco Painting·
Across Oklahoma, painting a standard 12 by 12 bedroom runs roughly $350 to $850 for the walls, and a full 2,000 square foot interior runs about $4,000 to $9,000 depending on what is included. Cost reports that track Tulsa jobs put a typical whole home interior between about $4,300 and $7,600.
The ranges are wide because interior painting is priced on labor, and labor depends on what has to happen before the first coat goes on. Here are the numbers per room, per square foot, and for the whole house, then the Oklahoma problems that change a quote, and how to compare quotes.
The short answer for Tulsa and the rest of Oklahoma
Per room: $300 to $1,000 for walls only in most rooms. Add 15 to 30 percent for the ceiling, more for trim and doors.
Per square foot: nationally, $2 to $6 per square foot of floor area, or $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot of wall surface. Tulsa area reports land around $4 to $6 per square foot of floor area with ceilings and trim.
Whole house: $2,000 to $4,000 for a 1,000 square foot home, up to $8,000 to $17,000 for a 3,000 square foot home with every surface painted.
Every number here is a market range from national cost guides and Tulsa and Oklahoma City cost reports, not Danco's pricing. A real quote for interior painting comes from seeing the walls.
Interior painting cost per room by size
The low end of each range assumes walls in decent shape, a similar color, and two coats. The high end assumes patching, a color change, or 9 to 10 foot ceilings.

Here is what national guides and Oklahoma cost reports show for occupied homes with 8 to 9 foot ceilings.

$2,000 to $4,000
$3,000 to $6,000

3,000 sq ft
$5,500 to $12,000
$8,000 to $17,000
One thing trips people up. Some painters price per square foot of floor area and some per square foot of wall surface. A 2,000 square foot home has roughly 5,000 to 6,000 square feet of paintable wall, so a $2 per foot wall quote and a $5 per foot floor quote can describe the same job. Larger jobs also cost less per square foot than a single room, since setup and cleanup are spread across more wall.
Ceilings, trim, doors, accent walls, and cabinets
These add ons turn a walls only quote into a full repaint. National ranges:
Ceilings: $1 to $3 per square foot smooth, more for texture. Expect ceilings to add 15 to 30 percent to a walls only room price.
Trim and baseboards: $1 to $4 per linear foot, or roughly $500 to $1,500 for a 1,500 square foot home.
Doors: $40 to $125 per side including the frame.
Accent walls: $100 to $350 as an add on while a crew is already in the room. Deep colors usually need a tinted primer and a third coat.
Kitchen cabinets: $30 to $70 per linear foot brushed, $40 to $100 sprayed, or about $2,000 to $6,500 for a typical kitchen. Cabinets are a separate trade with their own prep, so they are quoted on their own. See our cabinet painting and staining page.
What moves the price up or down
Two painters can quote the same house $3,000 apart and both be honest. The difference is usually one of these.
Prep work. Nail holes, caulking, and light sanding are usually included. Heavy patching or water stains add $150 to $400 per room. Wallpaper removal adds $400 to $1,200 per room.
Drywall repair. Damaged drywall or plaster runs $300 to $1,000 or more depending on how many sections need new tape, compound, and texture.
Wall height. Nine foot ceilings add about 10 to 15 percent, ten foot about 20 percent. Vaulted rooms and two story entries add 30 to 50 percent.
Color change. A similar color needs two coats. Dark to light usually needs a tinted primer plus two or three finish coats, adding 15 to 25 percent on those rooms. One color through the whole house saves 8 to 12 percent.
Furniture and occupancy. An empty house often quotes about 10 percent lower. A fully furnished room where the crew moves and covers everything adds $150 to $400.
Number of coats. Two coats is the standard and should be written in the quote. A quote far below the rest often means one coat, or walls only.
Oklahoma factors that change an interior painting quote
Drywall cracks from clay soil
Most homes from Tulsa and Broken Arrow down through Bristow and out to Oklahoma City and Edmond sit on expansive clay. It swells in a wet spring, shrinks in an August drought, and the foundation moves with it. Inside, that shows up as diagonal cracks off door and window corners, nail pops, and tape seams lifting at the ceiling line.
Painting straight over those cracks is the most common shortcut in a low quote, and it is why the same crack is back the next spring. A proper repair means cutting out loose tape, setting new paper tape in compound, feathering it, and matching the texture before paint. If cracks are wide, reopen every year, or come with sticking doors, the foundation needs a look first. Paint will not hold a moving wall together. When repairs go beyond patching, our sheetrock installation and repair page explains that work.
Knockdown, orange peel, and popcorn textures
Oklahoma housing stock is heavy on homes built from the 1960s through the 1990s, and nearly all of them have textured walls and ceilings. Knockdown and orange peel are the common wall finishes, and popcorn ceilings are everywhere in pre 1990 homes.
Texture moves the price three ways. It soaks up paint: a gallon that covers 350 to 400 square feet smooth covers closer to 150 to 250 on heavy knockdown. Every patch has to be re textured to match, and a bad match shows as a blotch once painted. And if you want smooth walls, skim coating adds $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot, which can double a room. Popcorn from before the 1980s should be tested for asbestos before anyone scrapes it.
Also, a lot of 1970s and 1980s trim and doors still carry oil based paint. Water based paint over it without a bonding primer peels within a year, so a careful quote includes that primer.
Rental turnovers in Stillwater
Stillwater landlords repaint on the school calendar, and most units are empty when the painter shows up. An empty unit, one color throughout, and several units in a row is the lowest cost per square foot interior work there is. Full repaints usually run every 3 to 5 years, and booking between semesters gets better availability.
How to compare quotes and what a written scope should include
A number in a text message is not a quote. Before comparing prices, make sure each painter has put these in writing.
Surfaces included. Walls, ceilings, trim, doors, and closets, each listed as in or out.
Coats and primer. Two finish coats, plus where primer is used and why.
Prep detail. What gets patched, caulked, sanded, and re textured, and what counts as extra.
Product and sheen. Product line and sheen for each surface.
Furniture and protection. Who moves furniture, how floors and fixtures are covered, and whether the home stays occupied.
Pricing basis. Floor area, wall area, or per room.
Timeline, cleanup, and touch ups. Start date, number of days, daily cleanup, and how touch ups are handled.
Once every quote lists the same scope, the price differences make sense. A quote 40 percent under the others almost always has something missing from this list.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to paint a 12 by 12 room in Oklahoma?
Across Oklahoma, a 12 by 12 bedroom with 8 foot ceilings runs about $350 to $850 for the walls and $600 to $1,200 with the ceiling and trim. Add 15 to 25 percent for a dark to light color change or heavy patching.
How much does it cost to paint the interior of a 2,000 square foot house?
Nationally, $3,800 to $8,000 for walls only and $5,400 to $11,000 for walls, ceilings, and trim. Tulsa area cost reports put a typical full interior repaint between about $4,300 and $7,600.
Do painters charge more for textured walls?
Usually a little. Heavy knockdown uses more paint per square foot, and patches have to be re textured to match. The big jump only comes if you ask to skim coat the texture away for a smooth finish.
Should I fix drywall cracks before painting?
Yes, and most painters do it as part of prep. Cracks from foundation movement need the old tape cut out and new paper tape set in compound, not a swipe of filler. If cracks keep reopening, have the foundation checked before spending money on paint.
